What Alabama RV Sellers Should Know About Titles
Not every Alabama RV follows the same title rule. The Alabama Department of Revenue applies different rules according to vehicle type, trailer classification, and model year.
For motor vehicles that are domiciled in Alabama and required to be registered in the state, the Alabama Department of Revenue generally requires a certificate of title when the vehicle is not more than 35 model years old.
Towable RVs require more care. Alabama says travel trailers and folding or collapsible camping trailers not more than 20 model years old require an Alabama title. The same official guidance lists fifth-wheel campers among trailers titled in Alabama, while also listing bumper-pull trailers among title exemptions.
Because everyday RV terminology does not always match an administrative classification cleanly, an owner of an older or unusual towable should verify the exact category with the Alabama Department of Revenue instead of making a title assumption from the hitch or body style alone.
Alabama also says assignment of a title or manufacturer’s statement of origin does not need to be notarized.
If There Is a Lien or Electronic Title
Alabama issues electronic lien and title records. If a lienholder is configured for the state’s ELT system, a title recording that lien can be issued electronically. A seller with an active lien should therefore tell OneRVBuyer about the lien before the transaction is finalized rather than assuming a physical title should already be available.
If the Alabama Title Is Missing
The titled owner or recorded lienholder can apply for an Alabama replacement title through the state’s Public Title Portal or a designated agent.
