California RV Sale Paperwork to Check

Some California trailers are registered through the Permanent Trailer Identification program, or PTI, and a paper California Certificate of Title is not automatically issued to every PTI trailer when there is no lienholder or legal owner.
California also distinguishes camp trailers from larger trailer coaches. A qualifying camp trailer falls within PTI, while travel trailers and fifth-wheel travel trailers that exceed California’s camp-trailer size limits are treated as trailer coaches and cannot be registered under PTI.

California DMV says a seller must notify the department within five calendar days after selling or transferring the title or interest in a vehicle and delivering possession to the new owner. The Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, commonly called the NRL, notifies DMV of the transfer, but filing it does not by itself remove the seller’s name from the ownership record.
If No Paper PTI Title Was Issued
For an applicable PTI ownership transfer where no paper title was issued, California DMV requires the Permanent Trailer Identification Certification, REG 4017, with the transfer portion completed.
If a Paper PTI Title Was Issued and Then Lost
California DMV uses the Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title, REG 227, when a paper PTI title was issued but was later lost, stolen, or mutilated.

Does a California Motorhome Need a Smog Check?
It can. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair states that RVs and motorhomes meeting the applicable criteria need Smog Checks. Towable trailers are not subject to the motorhome Smog Check requirement. Check the California Bureau of Automotive Repair guidance for the specific motorhome rather than assuming every motorhome has the same requirement.
