Iowa RV Title and Paperwork Basics

Depending on the RV and title situation, an Iowa sale can involve proper title assignment, applicable odometer or damage disclosures, proof of sale, and resolution of a recorded security interest.

The Iowa Department of Transportation tells sellers to properly assign the title, including the required seller signature, buyer information, and sale information. Check current Iowa DOT guidance before completing a transfer because the documents that apply can depend on the vehicle and transaction.

Iowa DOT instructs sellers to remove the license plates after a vehicle is sold. It also describes keeping proof of the transaction as good practice, such as a receipt from the buyer, a copy of the completed title assignment, or filing Iowa’s Notice of Sale of Vehicle and Delivery of Title.

For covered vehicle transfers occurring through December 31, 2030, Iowa DOT states that model-year 2011 or newer vehicles require odometer disclosure under the applicable framework. That can make odometer disclosure relevant to a motorhome, but it should not be automatically applied to a nonmotorized travel trailer or fifth wheel.

Iowa also has damage-disclosure requirements for qualifying motor vehicles, subject to state exemptions and age rules. Where the rule applies, Iowa uses a threshold based on repair costs exceeding 70 percent of the vehicle’s fair market value before the damage occurred.

If Your Iowa RV Title Is Electronic

Iowa’s Electronic Lien and Title system covers eligible titled vehicles including motorhomes and travel trailers. After a lien is electronically released, the title can remain electronic until the owner requests a paper title. If you do not currently have a paper title, confirm the title status rather than assuming the ownership record is missing.

If a Lien Is Still Recorded

Iowa title guidance identifies a Cancellation of Security Interest when an uncancelled lien remains shown on a title.

If the Title Is Salvage or Rebuilt

Physical damage alone does not automatically make an Iowa RV a salvage-title vehicle. If the RV already has a salvage title, do not assume an ordinary transfer process applies. Iowa DOT salvage guidance restricts who an individual may transfer a salvage-titled vehicle to, and motorhomes are expressly included among the vehicle types covered by Iowa’s applicable salvage-inspection process.

If a salvage vehicle completes the applicable process and receives a rebuilt title, the rebuilt brand remains part of its title history.
