What Mississippi RV Sellers Should Check Before a Sale

Start by identifying whether the RV is motorized or towable, whether the applicable title is available, whether a lien remains, and whether the title carries a brand. Mississippi does not apply one identical title rule to every motor vehicle and trailer.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Services administers the state’s motor-vehicle title system. Mississippi DOR says all motor vehicles have been required to be titled since 1969. It separately states that trailers over 5,000 pounds gross vehicle weight have been required to be titled since 1999.

For an RV seller, that distinction matters because a self-propelled motorhome and a towable RV should not automatically receive identical title guidance.

Exact paperwork can depend on the RV’s ownership and title situation, so use current Mississippi DOR guidance for the actual vehicle or trailer.

Trailer Weight Can Affect the Title Question

For a towable RV, gross vehicle weight can be relevant. Mississippi DOR specifically says trailers over 5,000 pounds GVW must be titled. That rule should not be reversed into an unsupported claim that every trailer at or below 5,000 pounds is automatically exempt from every title requirement.

Complete the Title Assignment Correctly

For transfer of ownership of a titled vehicle or trailer, Mississippi DOR says the title must be assigned to the new owner. The seller completes the applicable assignment sections, apart from the buyer’s printed name and signature, and the previous owner removes the license plate once the title is assigned and the vehicle or trailer is handed over.

If the Mississippi Title Is Missing

If a title required for the transaction is missing, lost, mutilated, destroyed, or ruined, Mississippi DOR says a duplicate or replacement title is required before the sale can proceed. Mississippi provides a standard replacement-title process and a Fast Track process.

A missing title should be raised early rather than assuming OneRVBuyer can complete every transaction without one.

If There Is an Active or Recently Satisfied Lien

Tell OneRVBuyer about an active or recently satisfied lien so the documentation needed for the transaction can be confirmed. Mississippi operates an electronic lien system. DOR says lienholders with a Federal Employer Identification Number must release satisfied liens electronically within 14 days of satisfaction. That requirement belongs to the lienholder, not to the seller.

A seller should not interpret the 14-day lienholder rule as a promise about when an individual OneRVBuyer transaction will be completed.

Does Every RV Require Odometer Disclosure?

No. Federal law contains exemptions that are particularly relevant to RVs. A vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating above 16,000 pounds is exempt from the federal odometer-disclosure requirement. A vehicle that is not self-propelled is also exempt, and age-based exemptions apply as well. See 49 CFR 580.17.

If the Title Is Branded

Mississippi DOR lists title brands including Salvage, Rebuilt, Flood damaged, and Hail damaged. Disclose the actual title brand accurately when requesting an offer. A visible condition problem and an official title brand are not interchangeable.

Mississippi’s published salvage guidance defines a salvage vehicle in this context as a motor vehicle obtained by an insurance company following payment of a qualifying total-loss claim, with additional exclusions stated by DOR. The guidance should not automatically be applied in exactly the same way to every towable RV.
